SAMANTHA RILES SAMANTHA RILES

When you need a good cry *kit*

It all begins with an idea.

Sometimes we all just need a good cry.
That lump-in-your-throat, eyes-brimming, heart-hurting-in-the-best-way kind of cry. When I feel off or low and can’t quite explain why, I’ve started to see it as my body’s quiet nudge — a sign it’s time to go inward. To slow down, journal, bead, cocoon myself in blankets, eat something warm and nourishing, and press play on a film that will crack me open a little.

It usually lines up with that time of the month — a natural dip, a soft invitation to feel more deeply, rest more deliberately, and let the emotions flow rather than fight them.

Being the hopeless romantic I am, my favourite films to cry to are the emotionally charged kind — not tragic love stories filled with illness or loss, but quiet, complex explorations of love, marriage, and relationships that shift with time. Stories about growing together, growing apart, and all the layered moments in between.

You know the kind — nostalgic, character-driven dramas that linger in your chest and whisper to your inner romantic long after the credits roll.

Here’s my personal cry-it-out list:

  1. The Story of Us

  2. Revolutionary Road

  3. Closer

  4. Scenes from a Marriage

  5. Little Children

  6. One Day

  7. Sliding Doors

  8. Take this waltz

  9. Blue Valentine

  10. The Deep End of the Ocean

Side note: these films always give me something to scrapbook about. ✂️📼🖋️
